Sculptor, John Norwood

John Norwood In Memory

Local artist, John Norwood, husband of Dr.Ruby Malva and father of Erica and Daniella. Passed away on March 6, 2021, at the age of 84.

John spent the majority of his adult life turning trash into art- using everything from discarded wine bottles to cigarette cartons. He was the epitome of a true recycler.

Over the years John and Dr.Malva graciously opened wide the doors to their home and John’s studio for the children of Poppenhusen’s art program and the students of our after school program at PS 29.

This was a very new experienced for the children whom most had never had the opportunity to view recycled art previously.

After the tour throughout the studio- the children were treated to tasty snacks while sitting on the family’s deck overlooking LaGuardia Airport and the NYC skyline.

Those visits not only brought smiles to the faces of the student but to John as well- who always enjoyed sharing his unique artwork with the young ones.

Within the next few months the Institute will be doing a “Voices of College Point” project on the life of this local sculptor. The video will also include snippets of information on Hermon Atkins MacNeil, Fredrick Tribel and Rubin Nakian; other local artists so stay tuned.
