Volunteers are the lifeblood of a non-profit community organization like The Poppenhusen Institute. From the Verizon Pioneers, who for over three decades did weekly repairs and maintenance on the building and grounds, to interns, who fulfill high school and college credits, organizing our archives and assisting at our events as well as members of the general public, the institute has a variety of volunteer positions open to you. These civic-minded people make the Institute what it is today and give us hope for tomorrow.

Volunteer Stories
Betty Pegen, was known as the “Gardening Angel” of College Point. Betty watched over the Poppenhusen Memorial for over 50 years. She tended the gardens there as a volunteer until her 96th year. Betty passed away in 2008, but the memory of her commitment to volunteerism lives on. Today, Brendon Ronan cares for that green space.
